Ole Miss Expecting Large Incoming Freshmen Class (Online)

The University of Mississippi is facing another record-breaking freshmen class for the 2011- 2012 school year. In the fall of 2010, Ole Miss welcomed 4,763 freshmen students, which was the largest the university had ever seen. Over the last few years, Ole Miss has seen a steady increase in applicants, admittance, and enrollment in the university. The admissions department expects the Class of 2015 to be no different. In fact, they expect that the Class of 2015 will be even bigger than the last.

Director of Enrollment Services Whitman Smith says that the university is unclear as to why there is such a trend but that theories range from the economy to recent publicity like the movie The Blind Side.

The University of Mississippi does offer a wide range of programs that are considered appealing to many students like the Sally Barksdale Honors College, Croft Institute and the Trent Lott Leadership Institute. The university also has an out of state tuition cost of $13, 890, which is considered fairly low compared to other universities.

So far, the university is planning on cutting down on upperclassmen housing on campus to help accommodate the incoming class. Construction has also begun on three new residence halls for the fall of 2012. The university also announced this week that they will be fixing the old law building to make way for more classrooms. However the renovations will not be complete in time for the new freshmen class.
